FAQ

Generally, a narrowboat used for cruising or live-aboard purposes will use solar panels ranging from 300W to 1KW. However, for battery maintenance, smaller solar panels may suffice.

With basic DIY skills and a bit of time, installing a solar panel becomes a straightforward task. We will guide you step-by-step guidance throughout the installation process.

Solar panels on your boat offer numerous benefits. They eliminate the need to run your engine or generator for charging, resulting in saved time, reduced fuel costs, and minimized noise. With solar power, your batteries can charge even when you’re away from the boat, ensuring they are always fully charged. And solar panels enable you to run high-power electrical devices like fridges and freezers without worrying about draining your batteries.

If you frequently change locations, install the panel on the cabin-top where it’s most likely to receive sunlight from all directions. Also, ensure it’s clear of obstructions such as deck equipment and chimney pipes. Remember that solar panels are generally not designed to bear weight, so avoid placing them in areas with heavy foot traffic!

Solar panels need a small air space underneath. Attach them to your cabin-top using No-Drill corner mounts or aluminium mounting brackets. These mounts and brackets will support the panel securely and allow air to flow freely. Contact us to modify a kit with adjustable mounting frame to extract more power from your panel.
